Rebecca Morin Professor Foster English Composition 10th, December, 2015 Ways of Seeing by John Berger is a set of essays used to explain different techniques used in oil paintings, advertisements, and the way people look at things differently from one another. The abstract image Altera Pars by Wojciech Grzanka is a part of his surreal photo manipulation series called â€Å"It’s All In My Head†. In this image a woman clearly with two sets of arms shows that she is control of how and what she feels. Her attire shows mixed feelings on how she wants to be looked at. She is wearing a dress that fades away towards the bottom and underneath she is wearing pants. She stands comfortably in a room that is grungy and dirty. Women and men should not be condemned to live up to society’s expectations of what is right and wrong. The third chapter in Ways of Seeing focuses on the idea that women and men have a different social presence. A man’s presence is supposed to represent how much power he has. The more power a man has the more grand a nd important he seems to other people. It represents what he can do to people and for people. A woman’s presence is represented by how she views herself and what she is willing to deal with from other people. She is also defined by her clothes, her actions, opinions, and what or who she is surrounded by. She has to act as if she was two different people, she is to observe herself and pay attention to the presentation of herself as other people do.
